Promising Young Woman (2020)

Promising Young Woman (2020) is a bold and unsettling revenge thriller from writer and director Emerald Fennell, delivered in her stunning feature debut. Carey Mulligan gives a fearless, unforgettable performance as Cassandra "Cassie" Thomas, a woman whose bright future collapsed after a devastating event in her past. On the surface Cassie leads a quiet, unremarkable life, but once the sun goes down she pursues a secret and carefully calculated mission of her own. Haunted by what happened to her best friend Nina, Cassie sets out to expose the men who believe predatory behavior comes without consequences. Each night she lures them in and forces them to confront the truth about themselves. When a face from her past reappears, Cassie is handed a chance to finally settle the score, and the film builds toward a climax that critics and audiences have called shocking, provocative, and impossible to forget. Alongside Mulligan, the film features a remarkable ensemble including Bo Burnham, Alison Brie, Clancy Brown, Jennifer Coolidge, Laverne Cox, and Connie Britton. With its bright, candy colored visuals, sharp wit, and fearless storytelling, Promising Young Woman blends dark comedy, romance, and psychological tension into one of the most talked about films of its year. Widely praised for its screenplay and Mulligan's lead performance, Promising Young Woman received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress, and won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
