A Vigilante 2018

A Vigilante is a 2018 American crime thriller written and directed by Sarah Daggar-Nickson in her feature debut, and it hands Olivia Wilde one of the most demanding roles of her career. Wilde plays Sadie, a woman who spent years trapped in a violent marriage and now lives out of cheap motel rooms with a map pinned to the wall and one purpose driving her forward. Sadie answers the calls that police never take seriously. A wife, a teenager, a mother with nowhere left to run. She arrives at the door in a wig and latex makeup, sits the abuser down, and refuses to leave until the victim has the house, the money, and a life that finally belongs to them. The one case she cannot close is her own. Her husband vanished, the life insurance claim is stalled, and every job she takes is another way of getting closer to the man who put the scars on her back. Told in fragments that slowly circle the worst night of Sadie's life, the film denies the easy satisfactions of the revenge genre. Daggar-Nickson keeps the camera close to Wilde's face and lets silence carry the weight, so when the violence arrives it feels like grief rather than triumph. The score by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans and the wintry cinematography of Alan McIntyre Smith turn upstate New York into a landscape of pure isolation. The supporting cast includes Morgan Spector as the husband, alongside Kyle Catlett, Tonye Patano, Chuck Cooper, Betsy Aidem, C.J. Wilson, and Judy Marte. The film premiered at SXSW in March 2018 and was released in the United States by Saban Films in March 2019, earning strong critical praise for Wilde's performance and a critics score near 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
